Birthday Bowling

Little Ian* was one of those kids who couldn’t handle big feelings or cope with even the slightest disappointment. You know them. The kids who throw chairs, flee restaurants, or go blank and mute in classrooms. They are the kids of early trauma who face higher risk of mental illness, substance misuse, and health problems.

This year, for Ian’s 9th birthday, Ian's Friend planned to fulfill Ian’s request for a bowling trip. For days, Ian happily anticipated the outing, and his excitement grew during the long drive from Chiloquin to Klamath. What a shock it was to discover an empty lot and closed lanes! Ian's Friend explained he must have received bad information about the alley’s hours, then waited for Ian’s reaction. To his delight, there was no explosion, or shutdown. Ian smiled and asked to celebrate in another way.

Friends have nurtured growth like Ian’s for 26 years. With consistent, intentional interactions, Friends mitigate the impacts of early trauma by helping children feel safe and seen, identify and regulate their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop pride in their unique strengths. With the support of Friends, kids like Ian are learning that even when life knocks them off course, they can pick up the ball, take another turn, and keep rolling forward.
