It wasn’t long ago that Reid* slammed the front door in Friend José’s face.

José had arrived for a mentoring visit, but Reid didn’t want to go. He just wanted to stay inside and play video games. But José kept coming back – week after week, month after month – showing up with the patience and consistency of a true friend. Over time, the relationship shifted.

Now, when José pulls up, Reid is already on his way out, smiling and running down the steps to greet him. The two spend their time hiking, going frogging, and playing soccer together.

Recently, as they arrived at the Friends Clubhouse, Reid shared a painful secret. “I don’t really have any friends,” he admitted. “Just my counselor… and you. ”José didn’t miss a beat. “This Clubhouse is full of people who care about you,” he said. “People who would be happy to be your friend. ”Reid’s eyes welled up. “You’re totally right,” he said. “And that brings tears to my eyes.”
